In the conditions like diabetes insipidus, the kidney produces excessive amounts or quantities of very dilute urine but otherwise normal urine. This causes excessive thirst and leads to dehydration.

Diabetes insipidus can be caused by a problem with the kidney itself or by a deficiency in the production of ADH or antidiuretic hormone. Desmopressin works by binding to the ADH receptors in the kidneys, which mimics the effects of natural ADH, this reduces the production of urine.
